HONG KONG SAR – (August 22, 2021). The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) organized a Mass Robot Programming event to set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title.
On August 22nd, 2021, HKPC earned the title for the most people programming robots simultaneously. 554 primary and secondary school students from over 70 Hong Kong schools met at Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre to demonstrate their computer science skills by programming robots to perform an autonomous routine synchronized to music. Students had to program their robots with at least 2 distinct actions and successfully demonstrate those actions.
The event was supported by agencies from the Hong Kong Government such as the Education Bureau, Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and HKEDCITY; Education organizations such as the Hong Kong Gifted Education Teacher’s Association, Association of I.T. Leaders in Education, Hong Kong Association for Computer Education; Universities such as Chinese University of Hong Kong, CityU Faculty of Engineering, and by students using the VEX IQ robotics platform.
“We hope to use this event to arouse public attention to the development of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Future Skills Training and STEM Education, and to stimulate young people’s interest in STEM fields and applications” said Ms. Ting Ting Chung, Director of the Innovation and Technology Commission.
“Guinness World Records will always strive to find, encourage, and share the incredible. We believe that joy comes from discovery, empowerment from giving your all, and happiness comes from sharing your passions. Our purpose is to make the world a more interesting, fun, and positive place. It is inclusiveness, passion, and fun that brings me here today with the hope that this attempt will encourage more younger people to be interested in coding” said Louis Jelinek, Guinness World Records adjudicator.
